Dr Lisa provides a comprehensive contraception clinic service for women. With her background as a General Practitioner and Reproductive Health Care Specialist, she can advise on the various contraception options that are available and their advantages and disadvantages. She can also carry out the safe insertion and removal of implants and coils.

 

There are a number of different options available for long-term contraception, with some methods being more suitable for some women than others. Dr Lisa’s extensive experience in the field of family planning means she can offer confidential advice about the different methods, and what might be most suitable to you.

 

Implant

 

Contraceptive implants are a long acting contraceptive option for women which lasts for 3 years. The implant is a small flexible plastic rod around the size of a matchstick that is placed under the skin of the upper arm. The insertion procedure with pre insertion counselling lasts 15 minutes.

 

The implant releasing into the blood, a steady dose of the a Progestogen hormone called Etonogestrel. Progesterones prevent pregnancy by doing 3 things: 

1.  Thins the endometrium, which is the inner lining of the womb, making it impossible for implantation of a pregnancy;

2.  Thickened mucous in the cervix, which makes it difficult for sperm to get through into the uterus.

3. It also stops ovulation.

Dr Lisa provides an insertion and removal service for contraceptive implants at The Clinic. Insertion takes 15 minutes.  Removal involves making  a 3-5mm incision under local anaesthetic and manipulation to locate and remove the device.  This removal procedure can take up to 30 minutes.  She can also remove the old implant and insert a new one during a single consultation.

 

Coils

 

There are 2 types  :

1. Copper Coil - known as IUD

2. Hormone Coil- known as IUS 

Copper IUD

 

A copper coil works locally,  releasing copper which prevents you from getting pregnant by 2 actions :

 

1. the copper is toxic to sperm, 

2. also the presence of copper in the endometrium and the cervix creates an environment unsuitable conception and implantation difficult.

 

The copper IUD gives lasting contraceptive protection and can last for ten years. 

Dr Lisa provides a copper coil fitting and removal service. Fitting takes approximately 30 minutes, and removal 15 minutes.  She can also remove an old coil and fit a new one during the same consultation.

Mirena Coil

 

The Mirena coil is a hormonal intrauterine device (IUD) used for long-term birth control. A T-shaped plastic frame is inserted into the uterus where it then releases the hormone progestin. As with the contraceptive implant, it prevents pregnancy by thickening cervical mucus and thinning the lining of the uterus. It prevents pregnancy for up to five years after insertion.

 

Dr Lisa provides a full fitting and removal service at The Clinic, with both procedures taking roughly an 40 minutes. She can also remove an old  coil and insert a new one during a single appointment.
